What would America be without the political genius of Thomas Jefferson? Britain, probably. The Jefferson Memorial is a beautiful open-air structure designed very similar to the Pantheon of Rome, of which, as an architect, he was a true admirer. Enclosed in the circular monument is a towering statue of the Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and this country’s third president, who is standing about quadruple the size of a man with head held high and a serious mouth. Inscribed on the giant walls are several of Jefferson’s inspiring quotes that somehow, even if only for an instant, make you want to get into politics.
