Divided from the Washington Monument by the famous National Mall and Reflecting Pool, the Lincoln Memorial is one of the most recognized attractions in Washington D.C. It is designed in the style of ancient Greek architecture, with 36 Doric columns representing the number of U.S. states at the time of his tragic death. Inside the structure is the notorious statue of Lincoln sitting upon his throne, a vision we have all seen in various movies and television shows, and on the south wall is the inscription of the Gettysburg Address. Inscribed on the opposite wall is Lincoln’s second inaugural speech.
